COVID-19 is a pneumonia of unknown cause occurring in Wuhan, China was reported on 31 December 2019 to the WHO Country Office in China. A new coronavirus virus called SARS-CoV-2 was responsible for the outbreak. This virus can cause the disease COVID-19. Due to rapid spreading of the virus, the WHO declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020. Since 11 March 2020, COVID-19 is considered to be a pandemic.
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe disease. A novel coronavirus is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. At the moment, many patients with COVID-19 are admitted to hospitals worldwide. In many countries, drastic measures are taken in order to control the spreading of the disease.
Since COVID-19 is a new disease, many aspects are still unknown at the moment. While most patients present with respiratory symptoms, early reports show that part of the patients develop cardiovascular problems. In some patients, cardiovascular symptoms are even the first sign of COVID-19. Besides, patients with a history of cardiovascular disease might be at a higher risk of a complications from COVID-19. Currently, insufficient evidence is available to guide monitoring of cardiovascular complications and treatment decisions in COVID-19 patients with a history of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, there is an urgent need for more research.
CAPACITY is a registry of patients with COVID-19. With this registry we aim to investigate the role of cardiovascular disease in the COVID-19 pandemic. Information from this registry can assist clinicians in making treatment decisions. Our hope is to hereby improve the care of patients with COVID-19.
Please consult your treating physician if you want to participate in CAPACITY.
